I'll probably read ahead and just flip through it. It covers to The Civil War literature is the main focus of this volume. A huge variety of African-American writers are included. I've said it before but I still use this book actively.

Got an A for American Literature, totally not biased with my review whatsoever. I love old literature! And I find these Norton Anthologies to be some of the most interesting collections of short stories, excerpts, history, and poetry available. Plath and Sexton's lifetimes spanned a period of remarkable change in the social role of women in America, and both are obviously feminist poets caught somewhere between the submissive pasts. Throughout American literature there are several themes that one can find and explore. All you must do is to look and interpret what you are reading.

One such theme is death and the idea of death. Death has always been in the collective conscious of Americans because, it is, well, inevitable. It is most certainly coming for each and every one and is inescapable. Therefore, the moral integrity of the American people in addition to its potential as an empire are dependent on the peaceful coexistence of science and religion.
